Fighting the desert, in Gansu

In the remote district of Min Qin, Gansu province in North West China, farmers live right between Tengger and Badain Jaran deserts. Over consumption of water, river diversion projets have threatened the water reserves. But no water = no grass = no barrier against the desert. Therefore, their villages are shrinking 10 meters every year. Those who can no longer grow vegetables either run away or get paid by the governement and NGOs like Oxfam to fight the desert before their villages disappear. Check out the full set of pictures here. These pictures are for professional use onl y (and not for free, obviously). Please don’t copy them without my written permission.
